A life afloat...
I have worked in the marine industry for over twenty years, starting aged 15 on a fishing vessel then seven years in the Royal Navy submarine service, followed by periods as a Marina Manager and Broker.
In that time I have been involved in many projects from 5-metre sailing boats to more than seventy ship and class surveys. This has given me a great understanding of the modern yacht building systems used and their failings as well as exposure to some truly wonderful craftsmanship in vessels old and new.
I am an accredited and committee member of the YDSA. Since starting RB Marine Surveys the business has taken me across the world to Africa, the Caribbean and the Far East, completing surveys on over 800 vessels, building up a broad knowledge base across many types of craft and the problems of the harsh marine environment.
Like many of my customers, having a passion for anything that floats has made me a serial boat owner, both sail and motor. My fifth is a 1969 Fairey Huntsman, which I am currently restoring. It is a challenge but a great project and a long time ambition to own one of these superb boats. The seductive charm of returning this British icon to its former glory demonstrates how fully I share and understand my customer's passion ...and their frustrations!
The elegant Huntsman 28 is Fairey’s most iconic powerboat and a larger, updated Huntsman 31 was built in 1967, some with an aft cabin. There were a number of bespoke variations on these wonderful wooden boats, designed by Alan Burnard. In all, about 450 hot moulded Fairey powerboats were produced and a large number were exported. All but around 40 of the total number produced have been accounted for as either seaworthy or sadly scrapped. www.faireyownersclub.co.uk
